Historic Highlights at Merrixton
A Rich History at Merrixton
Steeped in Pembrokeshire history, Merrixton House Farm has been welcoming visitors for centuries. The original house dates back to around 1750, while the gardens were thoughtfully remodelled during the 1880s, creating many of the historic features that can still be admired today.
As you explore the grounds, you'll discover a number of fascinating reminders of the estate's past. Historic terraces, a picturesque row of mature lime trees and a unique viewing mound all reflect the character and craftsmanship of a bygone era. From the top of the mound, visitors can enjoy beautiful views across the surrounding Pembrokeshire countryside.
One of Merrixton's most intriguing features is its historic parish lock-up – a small stone building once used to temporarily hold local offenders before they were taken before the magistrates. Local stories suggest that men were kept downstairs while women spent the night upstairs, offering a fascinating glimpse into rural life centuries ago.
Today, these historic features sit alongside the peaceful campsite, allowing guests to enjoy not only the beauty of the Pembrokeshire coast but also the unique heritage that makes Merrixton such a special place to stay.
